Michael Jackson, who passed away at the age of 50 in 2009, was an undisputed pop music legend. Now, Epic Records, working with the late King of Pop’s estate, is bringing the world an all-new album of eight never before heard tracks from Jackson. The record, titled Xscape, is slated for a May 13 release this year. Online pre-orders begin today, April 1.
Epic Records chairman and CEO L.A. Reid raided the Jackson estate’s vaults for songs that had completed vocals. He weeded the unreleased material down to just eight tracks, and gathered a group of producers to “contemporize” the tracks – giving them a “fresh, contemporary” sound. These producers include Timbaland (who acted as the album’s lead producer), Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, Jerome “Jroc” Harmon and John McClain.
“Michael left behind some musical performances that we take great pride in presenting through the vision of music producers that he either worked directly with or expressed strong desire to work with,” says L.A. Reid. “We are extremely proud and honored to present this music to the world.”
Sony, parent company of Epic Records, struck a deal with Jackson’s estate in 2010, a year after the singer’s death. That deal involved the release of 10 albums over a seven year period. Xscape will be the fourth posthumous release, following Michael (previously unreleased studio recordings), Immortal (re-mixes), and The Ultimate Fan Extras Collection (rare demos and alternate recordings).
Xscape the album is named for “Xscape,” which Jackson recorded with producer Rodney Jerkins. It will be the only track “contemporized” by the same producer who worked on the original recording.
However, a deluxe edition of the album will be released which includes both the re-produced tracks and the original recordings.
